Affirming Support That Meets You Where You Are
Aubrey McCann, MA
She/They
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
I grew up in a small rural community in Southwestern Ontario as a disabled and closeted queer kid with undiscovered AuDHD. My experiences inevitably shaped my drive to provide affirming, trauma-informed services to fellow marginalized and minoritized individuals. I moved to St. Catharines in 2013, where I ultimately completed my undergraduate degree at Brock University. After that, I worked in a variety of roles, gaining a wealth of diverse life experiences, then eventually reshaped my focus at Yorkville University in 2023, continuing to work toward my passion of helping others.
Over the years, I have worked in community settings as well as for private organizations, with youth and adults. In therapy, my work is rooted in a person-centered philosophy where I eclectically pull in helpful interventions from modalities such as: motivational interviewing (MI), solution-focused therapy (SFT), internal family systems (IFS), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
I believe therapy is a deeply individualized and collaborative process and I am committed to continuous, life-long learning in order to provide well-attuned services reflective of each client’s unique life journey. I strive to show up authentically, and approach clients with curiosity and compassion. I am also committed to ongoing learning and reflection as I work to provide competent, trauma-informed, affirmative, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based services, informed by feminist and decolonizing perspectives.
Outside of therapy and learning, I spend time engaging in creative hobbies, exploring provincial parks and nature trails, visiting with friends, reading, and spending time with my partner and our two cats.
